Self Employed InsuranceThe benefits of self employment are many. One is one's own boss. Therefore, one can set one's own work hours (and need not give up doing things as they interfere with fixed working hours), one's own rates and one can work from within the comfort of one's home in a relaxed and comfortable environment. One can also offer oneself health benefits such as health insurance through the self employed insurance scheme. While looking for an insurance company which provides health insurance to self employed individuals, it is important to look for coverage and cost of their plans. One way of getting an affordable health insurance plan is to get a group health insurance plan. This works best if one has family members who can be covered under this insurance policy. Importantly, some insurance companies allow an individual to get a group health insurance policy if the individual states that he or she is a group of one. One can watch out for companies offering this kind of insurance policy. Non self-employed people have the benefits of getting paid under a sick pay or health coverage scheme. This benefit is not available to self employed individuals though. As a result, if one is unable to work for a prolonged period of time due to ill health, one may struggle to meet one's expenses and earlier debts such as credit card bills, loans and mortgage. Insurance companies offer income self employed health insurance to protect against sudden depletion of funds due to ill health. Under this health insurance policy, a portion of one's monthly wage or a predetermined amount is paid to the customer. These policies generally have a waiting period of a minimum of one month. As a result, any compensation is only available after a lapse of at least a month. The insurance premium is inversely proportional to the waiting period. Thus, if one chooses to pay a lower premium, the waiting period goes up and vice versa. So, if one has enough funds to get through for a few months, one may choose to increase the waiting period and decrease the amount of premium that needs to be paid. One needs to be sure though that one has enough funds to get through the waiting period that one opts for. The insurance premium also depends upon the coverage of the insurance that is the amount of time that the insurance company will pay to the insured individual. Some companies may pay for a period of 12 months after the lapse of the waiting period while others may pay for 18 or 24 months. One needs to find out from the insurance company in advance. Self employed health insurance is the most widely available health benefit for self employed individuals and it is wise for them to get one in order to have something to fall back on in case one does not get to work for a long period of time due to ill health.
